What to Fix and What to Skip: A Parent’s Guide to Back-to-School Alterations

With back-to-school prep in full swing, many parents are faced with a familiar question: Do we fix it or replace it? From pants that almost fit to shirts that could use a little love, not every item needs to be tossed — and not every piece is worth repairing.

✅ When Alterations Make Sense

Some small tweaks can save you a lot of money and extend the life of your child’s wardrobe. Here are great candidates for tailoring:

  • Jeans that are too long but fit well everywhere else

  • Shirts or jackets with sleeves that need shortening

  • Waistbands that need slight adjusting

  • Garments that are loved but need small mends (like holes or loose buttons)

  • Good-quality secondhand pieces that just need a size tweak

❌ When It’s Better to Let It Go

Some fabrics and styles just aren’t worth the effort — and I’ll always tell you when that’s the case.

Skip the alteration if:

  • The fabric is extremely thin, stretchy, or frays easily

  • The seams are weak or poorly constructed

  • It needs multiple changes (e.g., hemming, waist shaping, sleeve reworking — all at once)

  • The cost of fixing exceeds what it’s worth to you or your child
