Garments Reimagined: The Art and Joy of Repurposing Fashion

There’s something incredibly satisfying about taking what already exists and turning it into something new — something better, more meaningful, more you. That’s the magic of repurposing garments, and for Sher Unbound, it’s one of the most rewarding aspects of her work.

“I’ve had clients bring me two different dresses and ask if I could turn them into one,” Sher says. “That’s the kind of work I love. It’s creative, challenging, and deeply personal.”

For Sher, repurposing isn’t just about sewing — it’s about transformation. It’s about seeing potential in the forgotten, the worn, or the outdated, and giving it new life.

Saving Sentiment, One Stitch at a Time

Some garments come with stories. A gown worn at a daughter’s quinceañera. A mother’s lace wedding dress. A favorite item that no longer fits quite right. Sher has a gift for not only repairing these pieces but reimagining them.

One standout project involved a formal quinceañera dress ripped down the front. The client, a young woman full of excitement, had worn the dress walking around Washington, D.C. — and damaged it before the big day. “I had to completely restructure the front of that gown. The pressure was on because her father hadn’t seen it yet, and they didn’t want him to know it had been damaged.” Sher rose to the occasion, restoring the gown’s elegance just in time for the event.

She’s also worked on wedding dresses, reworked formals, and brought treasured vintage lace back from the brink. “Lace can be repaired. Most people don’t know that — they think it’s too delicate or too far gone. But it can be done, and beautifully.”

The Traditional Meets the Timeless

Sher’s talents also extend to traditional cultural pieces. One project involved crafting an entire Mexican wedding suit from scratch — a stunning, ornate piece known as a “gaucho” outfit. She designed and tailored the entire ensemble by hand. “The groom and his bride were over the moon. It was one of my proudest projects.”

Alongside it, she tailored the bride’s wedding gown. The couple later sent her photos by the lake, fully dressed in their custom attire — a testament to Sher’s ability to honor tradition while tailoring something truly timeless.

When You Can’t Let Go — Don’t

So many people hold on to clothes they don’t wear anymore — not because they’re fashionable, but because they matter. Sher believes you don’t have to choose between memory and function.

“I always tell people: if you love it, we can do something with it. We can make it wearable again or turn it into something completely new. There’s value in honoring the life of a garment.”

Whether it’s combining items, resizing, or reimagining how something can be worn, Sher helps clients see their closets with new eyes. “I want people to know that they don’t have to start from scratch to feel beautiful and confident. Sometimes, the best pieces are already hanging in your wardrobe — they just need a little love.”
